Los Angeles (NBp) - Sunday night was television's biggest night of the year, as all of the stars big and small came out of the woodwork to pat each other on the back at the Emmy Awards. Once again, there were few surprises among the winners.

Bill Cosby won best actor in a comedy for the 14th straight year for The Cosby Show. The award for best comedy series went to M*A*S*H for the 25th straight year, largely based on the huge success of the series finale in the early 1980s.

The evening's biggest upset came when William Shatner won the award for best actor in a drama for TJ Hooker which also won best drama. TJ Hooker beat out newcomer The Sopranos and previous favorites such as ER, NYPD Blue, Charlie's Angels and Bonanza.

Another upset was the award for Best Hairstyling in a Series Featuring a Character that is Supposed to be Computer Generated but is Actually an Actor in Makeup which went to Max Headroom once again, when many academy members were hoping to see a new series rise up to face 13 time winner Max. In fact, Max Headroom is the only series to win the award so far.

Best actress honors went to Penny Marshall for Laverne & Shirley for comedy and Farah Fawcett for Charlie's Angels for drama. This was Marshall's 20th straight victory, and Fawcett's 17th.

A spokesperson for the academy denies that the awards skew toward an older crowd and states that even though TJ Hooker was cancelled years ago, one just can't get enough of that fine dramatic series.
